Members of the Downtown Student Life club partnered with the Keep Orlando Beautiful organization, a nonprofit administered by the City of Orlando, to help trash cleanup in part of the Downtown Orlando area. J’lin Rose, a graduate UCF student who led the group, says the group plans on doing more cleanups the future. Sean Hipps, coordinator of Keep Orlando Beautiful, was appreciative and enjoyed having young volunteers actively engaging in taking care of their city.
In recent years, there has been a growing wave of youth and young adults taking part in environmental conservation and protection, along with community support and engagement in their towns. Through their community engagement, the Downtown Student Life club tries to create connections and extend the scope the community they serve to increase student awareness of what is going on at a local level.
Though their numbers were small for their first meet up, Rose felt that they were still able to make a positive impact on the community and looks forward to the next meetup.
The next Downtown Student Life and KOB partnership is planned to be a massive cleanup event in May. Students will have three different stations around Downtown Orlando for trash cleanup. Any students who are interested in volunteering should contact the Downtown Student Life Instagram handle @dwntwnstudentlife.
