Launched in 1998, the Student Development and Enrollment Services (SDES) Appreciation Celebration recognizes the division’s recent accomplishments, employees for their years of service, and recipients of merit awards. UCF President Alexander N. Cartwright joined this year’s celebration to provide opening remarks and thank all employees for their dedication and service during this challenging year.
The Downtown Student Services and Valencia College Downtown Campus partners won the Outstanding Collaborative Effort award. This award recognizes two or more different departments collaborating to create new programs or enhance current programs that significantly increase quality service to respective students and staff. This year, the Downtown campus had over 30,000 duplicate student contacts throughout the Student Affairs departments maintain a 95% occupancy in housing, engaged over 3,000 students in programs and events, welcomed students through an integrated new student orientation model, and worked together to build a presence focused on making a difference in our host community in Downtown Orlando and the Parramore community.
An excerpt from the nomination stated, “The Downtown campus integrational services is unlike any other in higher education today. The term ‘what ends do you go to?’ is not part of our vocabulary. Instead, we ask ‘how can we serve you today?’ In the First Stop area, we do this by offering Associates of Arts advising in the same space as we offer student coaching and financial aid support. In the Student Success and Engagement Center, 15 departments from two institutions are supported by one centralized reception desk. We are proud of the work we have done through our partnership with Valencia College. It has not always been easy, but it has always been worth it.”
