This time each year, people around the world establish New Year’s resolutions and goals in hopes of creating happier and healthier lifestyles. It can be difficult to maintain those good habits when work, school, and other obligations return to their normal schedules. The start of a new decade is the perfect time for students to acknowledge their many accomplishments over the past several years and visualize what they would like to achieve in this next chapter. Luckily for UnionWest residents, many downtown resources provide ample opportunities to satisfy several of the most common New Year’s resolutions!
1. Get Fit
Both UCF and Valencia College Downtown students can meet all their fitness needs through the RWC @ Downtown. This facility is located on the second floor of UnionWest and provides a variety of weight machines, strength equipment, cardio equipment, and more. Certified personal trainers are also available for a fee, but an initial consultation is free! Individual exercising can still be intimidating, so a variety of group exercise classes are available all semester long for great workouts, including kickboxing, Pilates, Zumba, and even trampoline fitness.
Fitness encompasses much more than just the gym. Wellness and Health Promotions (WHPS) is also located in this facility and provides students with great services and programs on nutrition education, stress management, and more.
2. Get Outdoors
UnionWest is located just minutes from several beautiful parks with great scenery and frequent events. Lake Eola has a nice walking trail around the lake, making it a great location to unplug. Guests can also rent a swan paddle out onto the lake, enjoy yoga under the sun, or peruse the popular Lake Eola farmers market every Sunday. Loch Haven Park is another favored location great for a picnic in the shade. This park is right next to the Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando Science Center, and Orlando Repertory Theatre, providing a great and educational day away from social media and other distractions.
3. Get Better Grades
The first and second floors of UnionWest are home to several student services that can help with many academic goals. Students living at UnionWest can also take advantage of the resident-only study rooms located on the sixth floor.
The Dr. Phillips Academic Commons is home to the Learning Support Center, where students can receive free tutoring with the ability to rent out learning materials such as laptops, calculators, and so on. Other resources in this building include a Writing Center and the Downtown Campus Library.
No matter what resolutions are made, the new year is a great time to start better habits and seek the support to keep them going.
